Easing Pain Through Palliative Care

Easing Pain Through Palliative Care
August 26, 2022
According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, more than 20% of adults experienced chronic pain in 2019, while over 7% of adults had chronic pain that frequently limited life or work activities (referred to as high-impact chronic pain).
The study also showed chronic pain and high-impact chronic pain both increased with age, were highest among adults aged 65 and over, and were more prevalent in women.
Pain doesn’t discriminate and can strike at any time, though people living with chronic illnesses often suffer daily without symptom management.
September is Pain Awareness Month, a good time to examine what your options are when you or a loved one is living with pain. At Charter, we offer palliative care for patients managing serious or chronic illness. Palliative care offers relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness – including pain.
Palliative care is delivered based on the needs of the patient regardless of age, prognosis, or stage of illness or injury. It can be administered as its own form of care or as an extra layer of support alongside a primary treatment plan.
The goal of palliative care is to empower patients coping with serious illnesses to enjoy improved quality of life. By design, it addresses your medical, emotional and spiritual well-being and can be provided in the home or other settings.
Following an initial needs assessment, Charter’s care teams comprised of specially trained doctors, nurses and providers collaborate to create a personalized palliative care plan. Patients may utilize a range of services, including:
· Pain management
· Symptom control
· Care coordination
· 24/7 access to care for patients and caregivers
· Spiritual support
· Advanced directives and future care planning support
Charter’s mission is to deliver safe, compassionate care that improves quality outcomes, reduces costs, and creates a better experience for our patients and families. If you or a loved one are dealing with chronic pain, contact us to learn more about our suite of palliative care services and how they can help you.
