Are palliative care services right for you?

May 11, 2022

When you or someone you love is dealing with the stress of a serious illness, it can be difficult to navigate emotions and focus on anything other than getting through it. Depending on the severity of the illness and prognosis, this can mean different things for different people. Regardless of the medical treatment plan, all patients want to feel relief from the symptoms that can be associated with serious illness. That’s where palliative care comes in.

Why choose palliative care?

Palliative care is based on the needs of the patient regardless of stage of illness or prognosis and can be provided alongside curative or other treatments a patient receives for their condition. The goal of palliative care is to maximize quality of life by improving a patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Palliative care specialists work alongside primary care providers to coordinate plans of care that offer effective pain and symptom management at every step of treatment.

Is palliative care right for you?

Palliative care can provide relief for patients with a wide range of illnesses or chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, COPD and more. If you experience pain, fatigue, anxiety, difficulty breathing, nausea or other side effects as a result of your condition, illness or treatment, talk to your doctor about palliative care.

Many people mistakenly confuse palliative care with hospice. While both types of care focus on improving quality of life, there are some key differences to when they are applied. Hospice is quality, compassionate care for people with a prognosis of six months or less.
