The Impact of Nurses on the Post-Acute Journey

Nurses are the lifeblood of health care. This is true across the medical field and especially in Charter’s daily work with patients, families and referral partners. Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients and they work closely with them throughout the health care journey, monitoring their condition and providing care to improve quality of life.

Nurses who specialize in post-acute care often provide care for longer periods of time than those who work in hospitals and other acute care settings, so they often get to know patients and families better and have more time to work toward their goals of care.

In honor of National Nurses Week (May 6-12), we’re proud to acknowledge the tremendous contributions of our nurses and thank them for the care they provide Charter patients across the country. Charter’s nursing staff is diverse, with many types of nurses working alongside one another as part of the interdisciplinary team delivering care.

Nurse Spotlight: Meet Katie Fetter

Registered Nurse Case Manager Katie Fetter joined the Las Vegas Charter Healthcare team in 2020 and consistently demonstrates her commitment to enriching lives by delivering safe, compassionate care. As a registered nurse case manager, Katie develops plans of care that meet each patient’s needs and wishes. Read on to learn more about Katie’s decision to become a hospice nurse and the difference she makes in the lives of Charter Healthcare’s patients.

Tell me about your responsibilities as an RN Case Manager.

My main role is to make sure my patients are comfortable according to their wishes and to provide education and support throughout the end-of-life process. I like to provide “warm and fuzzy” nursing, so I try to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as they can throughout the process or experience.

What made you want to become a nurse?

I lost my first spouse to cancer many years ago and was floored by the overwhelming support we received from his care teams throughout his experience. I wanted to try to give back and offer that same support through scary situations others were facing.

How did you end up in post-acute care, and what do you like about working with patients and families in this area of health care?

It was always my goal to work in either oncology or hospice. I really like having the time to get to know my patients and caregivers.

What does “the Charter difference” mean to you in your work?

The Charter difference is really exemplified by our team as a whole. Everyone is so incredibly talented and really goes the extra mile to provide the best care possible to our patients and to support caregivers. It makes me proud to know that if I can’t answer a question or tackle a problem myself, I can lean on my team and there will be someone just as passionate as I am who can help.
